Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 9, 2026
This policy explains what The Democrat App LLC collects when you use The Democrat App, what we do with it, and what you can do about it. It covers our mobile applications and the website at thedemocrat.app. It forms part of our Terms of Service.
The short version. We collect what we need to show you your ballot and compute your match scores. We do not sell your personal information. We never sell, rent, license or disclose your quiz answers to anyone — not to campaigns, not to data brokers, not to anyone who buys advertising from us.
1. Who we are
The Democrat App is operated by The Democrat App LLC, a Georgia limited liability company based in Atlanta, Georgia. We are the controller of the personal information described here. You can reach us at support@thedemocrat.app.
We are independent. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or operated by the Democratic National Committee, any state or county Democratic party, any government agency or election office, or any candidate, campaign or political committee.
2. What we collect
Account information. Your name, email address, and date of birth. We use date of birth only to confirm you meet our minimum age.
Location information. Your ZIP code, and optionally a street address. A street address is what lets us resolve your exact congressional, state senate and state house districts. ZIP alone works, with less precision.
Phone number. Optional, and only if you choose to receive text updates.
Sign-in information. If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive basic profile information from them — typically your name and email address.
Quiz answers. Your responses to the Political Match Quiz, and the importance you assign to each issue. See the next section.
Orders. If you buy merchandise, your shipping details and order history. We never see or store your card number — payments are handled entirely by Stripe.
Content you post. Community posts, saved candidates and organizers, and any message you send us.
Basic technical information. Device type, app version, and error logs, used to keep the app working.
3. Your political opinions are sensitive information
Your quiz answers describe your political opinions. Under California law and the privacy laws of several other states, political opinions are a specially protected category of sensitive personal information, and we treat them that way.
We use your quiz answers for exactly one purpose: to compute your match scores against candidates and officeholders, and to show those scores to you. We do not use them to profile you, to target advertising, or for any purpose you would not expect.
If you use the share-a-code feature to compare results with a friend, that friend sees your match scores, because that is what you asked for. Nobody else does.
4. What we do not do
- We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising.
- We do not sell, rent, license or disclose your quiz answers to campaigns, political organizations, data brokers, advertisers, or anyone else.
- We do not give your email address or phone number to campaigns for their own use.
- Buying placement or marketing services from us does not give a campaign access to user data. Those are advertising and consulting arrangements. They are not data arrangements, and we do not offer data arrangements.
- We do not use your information to train artificial intelligence models.
5. How we use your information
- To create and manage your account
- To show you the officials, candidates and races that apply to your address
- To compute your match scores from your quiz answers
- To show you events near you
- To send messages you have asked for
- To fulfil merchandise orders
- To respond to your support requests
- To diagnose problems, prevent abuse, and improve the app
- To comply with law
6. When we share information
Service providers. We use other companies to run the app. They receive only what they need and may not use it for their own purposes:
- Supabase — database, authentication and file storage
- Vercel — website and API hosting
- Apple and Google — app distribution and sign-in
- Stripe — payment processing for merchandise
- Printful — merchandise printing and shipping
- Mobilize — event listings
- YouTube (Google) — video content
- ImprovMX — email forwarding for our support addresses
Canvassing, only if you opt in. You may choose to share your name and mailing address with candidates, campaigns and political organizations so volunteers can reach you. This is off by default. You turn it on in your profile settings and you can turn it off at any time. It never includes your quiz answers, your match scores, your email address or your phone number.
When the law requires it. We may disclose information to comply with a valid legal process, to enforce our terms, or to protect the rights or safety of any person.
Business transfer. If the company is sold or merged, information may transfer as part of that transaction. Any acquirer would remain bound by this policy, or would give you notice and a choice before changing it.
7. Email and text messages
We send marketing and update messages only to people who have opted in. You can unsubscribe from any email using the link in it, stop texts by replying STOP, or change your preferences in the app. We will still send transactional messages — order confirmations, password resets, and notices about your account.
8. Your choices and rights
At any time you can:
- View and edit your profile in the app
- Retake or clear your quiz answers
- Use a ZIP code only, and not give a street address
- Turn canvassing sharing on or off
- Opt out of email and text messages
- Delete your account, in app settings or at thedemocrat.app/delete-account.html
9. State privacy rights
Depending on where you live — including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Texas, Oregon, Montana and a growing number of other states — you may have the right to:
- Know what personal information we hold about you and how we use it
- Access a copy of it
- Correct inaccurate information
- Delete it
- Port it to another service
- Opt out of sale or of sharing for targeted advertising — we do neither, so there is nothing to opt out of
- Limit the use of sensitive personal information, including your political opinions — we already limit ours to computing your match scores
- Not be discriminated against for exercising any of these rights
To exercise any of them, email support@thedemocrat.app. We will verify your identity using the email address on your account and respond within the time your state's law requires, generally 45 days. You may use an authorized agent.
10. How long we keep information
We keep your information while your account is active. When you delete your account, we delete or de-identify your personal information, including your quiz answers, except where we must retain something to comply with law, resolve a dispute, or enforce our agreements. Order records are kept as long as tax and accounting rules require. Backups are purged on a rolling basis.
11. Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit, encryption at rest through our providers, row-level access controls on our database, and restricted administrative access. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a breach affects your information, we will notify you as required by law.
12. Children
You must be at least 16 to use The Democrat App. The service is not directed to children under 16 and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. If we learn that we have, we will delete the account and the information. If you believe someone under 16 has created an account, write to support@thedemocrat.app.
13. Where we operate
The Democrat App is offered in the United States and your information is processed there. We make no representation that it is appropriate for use elsewhere.
14. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. We will change the date at the top of this page, and for material changes we will give notice in the app or by email before they take effect.
