The Democrat App helps you find candidates, learn where they stand, and take part in the democratic process. This policy explains what information we collect, why, and the choices you have.
Information we collect
We collect the information you give us when you create an account and use the app:
Account details: your name, email address, and date of birth. We use date of birth to confirm you meet the app's minimum age requirement.
Phone number: if you provide one and opt in, so we can send you text message updates. Providing a phone number and opting in to texts is optional.
Location information: your ZIP code, and a street address if you choose to enter one, so we can show the candidates, elected officials, and races for your specific districts. Entering a full street address is optional and only used to refine your districts.
Google sign-in: if you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address, and basic profile information from your Google account.
Quiz responses: your answers to the in-app political match quiz, which we use to calculate how closely candidates align with your positions.
Purchase information: if you buy merchandise, your order and shipping details. Payment card information is handled by our payment processor and is not stored by us.
Messages you send us: if you contact us, we keep your message and contact details so we can respond.
How we use your information
To create and maintain your account and keep you signed in.
To show you candidates, officials, and races relevant to your location.
To calculate and display your candidate matches from your quiz answers.
To send email or text updates you have opted in to receive.
To process and fulfill merchandise orders.
To respond to your questions and support requests.
To operate, maintain, and improve the app.
Email and text messages
We only send marketing or update emails and texts if you opt in. You can opt out at any time — use the unsubscribe link in any email, reply STOP to any text message, or update your preferences in the app. Standard message and data rates may apply to text messages.
How your information is shared
We never sell or share your phone number or email address with candidates, campaigns, or other third parties for their own use. If you opt in, we may share or provide your name and mailing address — and never your phone or email — to candidates, campaigns, and political organizations, for purposes such as door-to-door canvassing. This is optional, and you can withdraw your consent at any time in your profile settings.
Separately, we share information with the service providers that help us run the app, and only as needed to provide the service:
Supabase — secure database, authentication, and file storage for your account and app data.
Vercel — hosting and delivery of the app.
Google — if you choose to sign in with Google.
Stripe — to process merchandise payments securely. Your payment card details are handled by Stripe, not stored by us.
Printful — to print and ship merchandise your order.
YouTube (Google) — video content in the app is embedded from YouTube, which may collect data as described in Google's privacy policy.
Mobilize — event listings shown in the app are provided by Mobilize.
We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect the rights and safety of our users or others, or in connection with a business transfer.
Your choices and rights
Access and update: you can view and edit your profile information in the app.
Delete your account: you can delete your account and associated data directly in the app, in your profile settings.
Opt out of messages: unsubscribe from emails or reply STOP to texts at any time.
Location: entering a full street address is optional; you can use a ZIP code alone.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights over your personal information, such as the right to request access to or deletion of it. To make a request, contact us at the email below.
Data retention
We keep your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the app. When you delete your account, we delete or de-identify your personal information, except where we are required to keep it to comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, or enforce our agreements.
Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections and access controls through our service providers. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Children's privacy
The Democrat App is intended for users who meet the minimum age shown at sign-up and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
